I would think that the db2 protocol would be more efficient... Xml is
great for being expressive, precise and interoperable. But, it's verbose
and relatively slow to parse a binary protocol will be faster.

I'm not sure what you mean by db2 protocol, but XMLSERVICE exposes an XML
interface anyway, whether its running under QZDASOINIT, QSQSRVR, or a CGI
job.

Rumors are that a future release will support JSON declarations in addition
to XML.
