I’m going to have to talk to some of my "PHP on IBM i” literate friends because all of the permissions stuff relate to the user WP runs under and ownership of the files etc. Somebody has been this way before - I just need to find them. So frustrating because everything else works perfectly. Luckily I don’t have to have the updates so I’m going to stop wasting time on it. This one aspect has cost me more time that the rest of the project put together.

As to passwords it looks as if I will simply change all passwords to a new value and email the users asking them to change it when they log in. Doesn’t seem to be an easy way to set a password as expired because WP doesn’t provide the facility so it is plug-in dependent.

Hi Jon,

OK! We are good. Just to recap:

1st issue: Check the wp-config.php settings for FTP and the directory's
security for the plugins. References:

2nd issue: You can manually update the passwords on MySQL by changing the
field type to MD5 and copy+paste the passwords from one site to another.

Using MySQL.

As I have said before this is a 100% standard implementation of WP. The
web designer who put the thing together knew nothing about “AS/400” (i.e.
IBM i) and didn’t need to.

The install is no different than on Linux or AIX or …

Hi Jon,

So far so good?

regarding your second issue: WP encrypts passwords using MD5.
Yes you can update the password manually by changing the field type.
However I don't know if under the AS 400 you are using MySQL. Most likely
no, if you are using DB2/400 I may need to review the table structure and
with a SQL statement it should be straight forward to do the update
either
using Visual Explain or DBU or STRSQL....
As I mentioned before, I don't have ZEND nor WP runing on the AS400
(until
next week maybe) I love this challenges... I love my job!

Hi Mauricio, thanks for offering to help.

I actually have two issues right now.

First is the one I posted on the Wordpress forum:

"WordPress has updated itself just fine but when I try to update Plugins
and Themes I get the following failure message for all updates.

Downloading update from
https://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/akismet.3.1.1.zip…;
Unpacking the update…
Installing the latest version…
Plugin update failed.
An error occurred while updating Akismet: The package could not be
installed. The package contains no files.

I can't find any log messages or anything else to tell me why this is
failing. Any suggestions? I'm a WordPress newbie and this is my first
problem of this nature."

Second issue is that I am setting up users by copying their details from
an older system - but I can’t copy the passwords and need to force them
to
set a new pw when they first sign in to the new system. Not sure how to
accomplish that. Any search for expiring passwords just presents me
with a
myriad of people who want me to install their particular security plug
in.

The webmaster from http://alpineschools.org/ gave an excellent

I think he manages or supports something like 75-100 WordPress sites.

Anyone here got any suggestions for good sources of assistance with
WordPress?

I’ve tried the main support forums but they literally get so many
questions an hour that the net result seems to be that only a tiny
percentage get any responses. And mine is not one of them! Within
12
hours of posting it had sunk to page 3!
