The Manta course delivery software has been doing this for 12 years or so. All of our content is stored in XML format. We wrote our own Ajax routines that respond to student actions and download course elements as needed. Ironically, our original motivation was to pre-read sessions and figures to deliver subsecond response time over dial-up lines.
