Paul

We have discussed this briefly on IBM AS/400 Professionals on Linked In

I said "The common tasks that you list are in principle very simple and
very common. The most difficult might be looking up associated data. If you
define your data as relationships in a connectionist database, then simply
clicking on, say, a sales order entry line will lead directly to the
product and then to other orders and then to purchase orders etc. No coding
at all is required to achieve this. The amount of code required is minimal
and it is the same for each list."

I should have also said that the tasks that you list are equally required
in 5250 mode and if your applications are built using a connectionist
database and web enabled the way that I have used in ERROS, then any 5250
mode operation such as you list will work immediately with a browser
without any special development work for rhe browser being required.

We all develop software/solutions for businesses. Within these
solutions, we believe there are a lot of "repetitive" tasks. For
example, when coding, we deal with tons of LISTS or records such as
STUDENTS, CLASSES, PURCHASE ORDERS, PRODUCTS, VENDORS, ORDERS, BILL OF
MATERIALS, INVOICES, WARRANTY CLAIMS, EMPLOYEES, CUSTOMERS, SALES, etc.

As a web developer, your most common tasks are:
1. Display a list of records
2. Display a list of records with a filter
3. Display a list of records with a drop down pick list filter
4. From this list, allow a single record to be selected to view all
fields.
5. When the list is to large, develop ability to 'page' data a set at a
time.
6. From the list of records, allow associated data to be looked up.
For example, from a list of customers, show the orders for a particular
customer.
7. etc....

The list of generalized tasks is obviously large. What are other most
common programming tasks we all face? Is my ranking correct?

Perhaps, this should be another WIKI page or even a database driven list
of requirements?
