If you are using the prefork MPM then the maximum number of HTTP
connections you can have is limited to the number of processes.

No, I was referring to the IBM i HTTP Server, based on Apache. I'm not sure what "prefork MPM" has to do with it. I've dialed up the Apache thread count to thousands on a 1 core, 1GB RAM server, and didn't notice any performance problems.

I think the performance concerns have more to do with one's CGI or application server architecture than the number of concurrent connections that the Apache server may support.
