The $ matches end of line. If there is anything after /jonspgm then using $ will not match, and thus not replace with the alias.

Can you provide examples of the URI you expect to have matched?

I did Sean - it is the example above. I don't want an exact match - looks like the $ is the answer and I git confused by the Apache docs description.
