As someone who is fortunate enough to do quite a bit of under the radar R&D (sounds better) I am not a big fan of trying to get things done at lunch. It seems to be a favorite suggestion but I wonder how many of those making the suggestion have actually tried to learn a programming language that way. I have tried on numerous occasions and find it to be a frustratingly short period of time. I'm just getting warmed up, or I'm struggling with a new concept and have to stop and get back to 'real' work. For me anyway, I need longer blocks of time. And then, there are the interruptions by my coworkers who stop by with work questions because I'm at my desk.
I find it much more advantageous to use any 'spare' time I can find to work on these types of things. My management is pretty open to this too as long as business priorities aren't impacted. I realize not everyone's situation is the same.
