I my programs will not work if I program against an API that is not yet implemented, or stated another way, if I make assumptions based on the designs of someone at IBM, my code will not work until those designs are realized. In this case I have been waiting for years, and at every presentation I attended, I have asked about this. Still no movement. If anyone knows how to assimilate an existing file into the DB2 storage engine for MySql, please let us know. Deleting and recreating the files through MySql is not a valid answer here.

I can't program based on someone else's goals. The DB2 extender is only useful for new files created through MySql until those goals become reality. Until then there is little difference between using MySql on the i and using Postgres on the i. I do agree that MySql is a bit better suited for this purpose due to it's ability to add storage engines. Beyond that it is a wash. We will just have to see what Oracle does.

Sorry Mark - but I have to disagree.
The current storage engine was the first phase. There were on-going discussions within IBM months ago about how to enable it for existing tables (DB2 or DDS) and it was certainly the goal of at least one Rochester developer to make that happen. The storage engine is an IBM development - not MySQL. So it will depend on IBM as to whether it continues and is enhanced.
The withdrawal of support by Oracle may make iBM think twice about extending the product - but that's about it.
Many folks have already enabled existing databases. It is not exactly rocket science.
