I agree. Ajax works well for this in simple cases. In some more
complex cases, selecting an item from the drop down requires additional
fields to become applicable while others become N/A. In these cases, we
do full round trip request/response re-rendering (non ajax). (example:
Create an online from Walmart, during checkout, if you select parent
item "Home Delivery" then you need to make the delivery address fields
visible and applicable. If you select "Pickup at Store" then a
different set of fields become applicable. Dozen of other similar
examples exist.

If they choose another manufacturer then go get those and replace the ones that were there with the new ones. This is a very easy and straight forward approach to take and execute.

Hi Mike,

Does ASP/.net provide a reusable component to handle this "parent/child" drop down list challenge or do you have to code for each occurance? This "parent/child" pattern is common in a lot of business apps we run into. (IE Select a car mfg such as Ford or GM, then based on the parent, show the models (F150, Explorer)
