Whenever I have had to write a .NET based web service I have coded the class(es) in Visual Studio and then the WSDL is generated for me to distribute to potential consumers of my web service. The .Net approach seem to take you this route by default. I have never written the WSDL first. When I first started doing this (quite a while ago) I wouldn't have had a clue how to develop the WSDL anyway.
Should I be ashamed of myself?

Huh? You are advocating the code first approach? That's like writing a
bunch of programs and then designing a database to fit what you wrote.

That sounds like the code first approach. Ugh. Always use the contract
first approach where you create the WDL and schemas and generate the code
stubs from that.
