It's hard to say since I'm not sure what your code looks like now.
In theory, moving require('connection.php') and establishing the connection before you try to use the i5_data_area_read function should solve your original problem assuming there are no other errors.
I assume you are not seeing any errors on screen. Have you tried looking at the php error log?

Move all my HTML stuff down after my connection code?

I tried moving the connection code up, but it only shows the first heading,
something is wrong there.

Any guidance would be appreciated.
