It isn't a bad concept when you are limited by resources. In your
situation, all of the plugins could be proprietary and closed source but
you get the advantage of the collaboration of many partners to deliver a
complete solution.

I've been thinking along the same lines. I've been laying out about 10-15 new database tables per month, and cranking out new applications to maintain them. But I'm one of those "limited resources".
