I suppose you (and others) just need to shop around then to get ASP.NET
hosting for similar prices or less (it's not that difficult)

IMO, $100/month is expensive for personal hosting (i.e. not generating
income). In the SMB world it's a bargain. However, I can get LAMP
hosting for $4/month if purchased in a 3-year block. I did a 12-month
block for $6/month ($72/year). The particular hosting service I have
throws in Ruby too.

I suppose it is down to what you consider cheap? I rent a server from an
ISP
for 60 GBP, say 93 USD, a month and run 15 web sites off it. You can
host an
ASP.NET application on your PC at home via Broadband for virtually free
if
you want? I wouldn't call that particularly expensive...?
