Consider deploying applications under a Portal. If you'd be interested in me giving a demo of the one I wrote, you can contact me privately.
My portal has a "Logout" link, which users can click. But I'm considering adding a timeout variable to automatically force a log off after a period of inactivity.
HTTP server authentication doesn't really give you that type of flexibility.
