You are correct that the focus has been on community building but there are some commerce components available. Have you looked at any of the case studies on the site yet (page through the postings on the front page)? There have been some pretty big projects recently that use it but I don't recall commerce being a big part of them.

As far as it being a solid system, I've been running a Drupal site (http://www.amcyclopedia.org) for a few years and I can't remember really having a problem with it (I have had to tweak a few modules). I'd like to see more fine grained access control than what version 5 has but I think that is part of version 6 (or on the enhancement map for version 7). Upgrades have been pretty painless as well.

If you decide to use it, get the FCKEditor module. This provides a UI for the pages that looks pretty much like a typical word processing app. Several pages on the site I run have been created by people with no experience creating HTML. They had no problems creating stuff after I installed that module.

Subject: [WEB400] Commercial Drupal

I've looked at Drupal from afar and noticed that there is an appreciable
support community around it as well as impressive endorsements. However, it
seems to me like their primary focus is to build communities. I'm receptive
to the notion of nurturing loyal customers through a sense of belonging.
However, what has been your experience with deploying Drupal in a commercial
environment? Is there a certain level of undoing required to roll out a
Drupal site with an emphasis on information for the purpose of commerce vs.
community?
