The internal search function is temporarily non-functional. The current search engine is no longer viable and we are researching alternatives.
As a stop gap measure, we are using Google's custom search engine service.

Why would they do that? Soap based Web services are a lot slower than
traditional ODBC, for example.
Yes, but the web service provides access to a process, ODBC provides
access to data. What if you want to control who does what. Or need to
add additional pre/post update processing to the call? A webservice
provides all sorts of extension points that a pure DB update doesn't.
Also, you're free to change your backend design as long as you maintain
the web service contract. Oh, and it's more cross-platform too. :-)
