ThorbjørnOk, thanks. I was hoping to avoid the "first do a selective install of your iSeries Access" step - but apparently this is not so easily done. Sigh :)
There is a .Net provider for iSeries - it does install from Selective Setup of iSeries Access. I'd thought it could once upon a time be installed by itself - not sure now. You do need the MS .Net runtime, just as you need the JVM for Java.
