I have been meaning to port OpenBravo (open source Java ERP/POS package -
http://openbravo.com) to the AS400 but have been hesistant because that is a
large chunk of Java to run on any underpowered machine.

Why not give Apache OFBiz a try ;-)

But back on topic ... end of last year I was at an IBM Lab to test OFBiz
on a AS400 and to my surprise the performance was quite good. It was a
525 Power 5+ CPU with 2,2 GHz and Java 5, 32-bit (IBM J9 VM). One reason for the improvement be that the CPUs are now running at full speed on all machines.
