I've used regular ASP, but not with .NET and the .ASP didn't seem that bad although I'm
amazed at how far behind programming is in the way of design and productivity tools for
web apps or perhaps I'm missing something.
Yup, you've missed something. You've missed .NET. Comparing _any_ experience in ASP to what you can do with .net 3/3.5 and c# is like saying you did RPG on the mainframe in the 60s but you've stayed away from ILEA RPG and you're amazed at how limited it is to use RPG since it's only for reports.
If the decision is made to go a route other than MS, great. I've got no problem there. But make it an educated decision, not one based on technology that's over a decade old.
