I also mentioned non-standard implementations of standards. There are
elements IE implements badly. I'm not arguing that checking for the
functionality isn't superior to checking for a User Agent string. e.g.
Depending on which version of MS' XML library is installed the same version
of IE could use different names for the same things.

There are times when IE does have the element you're looking for, it just
behaves incorrectly. I try to avoid such situations instead of writing code
targeting IE. However, I could see how someone married to IE could want to
make sure it's really IE they're dealing with. I'm not endorsing this as
correct, I was responding to your question. MS ran into this when they
launched IE7. There is a lot of hack code out there targeting the "quirks"
in IE and that caused problems for even the modest improvements in IE7.

I can't see why you would ever care what the remote browser is. I can
see caring about what it supports, but not what it is.
