Caching of data tables, is in my opinion, an extremely valuable
feature

Ah, but then you either 1) expose the dataTable object to the web layer
or 2) Assume the business object layer will always have access to the
ASP.Net cache (that is, only run in the context of a web app).

We have (rarely) used the ASP.Net cache, but only for business objects
(or collections of them). Most of the time we go back to the well
(database) for the data.
