My understanding is that the DB2 functions are designed to be
general-purpose database functions that work with any DB2 database
(including the one on the i). (The DB2 code does support i-specific
functionality, such as setting the naming to *SYS.) In other words, the
stuff that the Java programmer would typically get from JDBC.
The i5 functions are (if I understand correctly) things that are not
general database functions. Stuff like record-level I/O that doesn't
exist in other databases (including other DB2 implementations), or the
ability to run a program or command, stuff like that. In other words,
the type of stuff that Java programmers would get from the JT/400 classes.
