I don't enjoy the faces-config.xml file that much either. I believe theDon't count on it. JSF 2.0 is still pretty soft, and their focus seems to be more on some other things (like Ajax). I'll be interested, actually, to see what does make it into JSF 2.0. I haven't been following that particular thing because I hated JSF so much when I first saw it.
latter versions of JSF use annotations to address these issues.
