I have done some similar tests on our list of classes that students look at. Might be 2,000 classes if they look for all. The SQL runs very fast and even sending it to the user (99% are on campus on a 100MB connection) is fast. The delay is in the browser rendering the page. Side by side runs of the same request on a quad core PC and a single core PC has a dramatic difference in the response. For fun watch the green bar at the bottom of the window in IE. When it gets to the far right the data has arrived. The time between when that happens and you can actually see the page is all local processing by the browser and other than make the page smaller there is no way to speed it up from the server side.

I would even go as far as to add a middle ground. Have an input field on
the screen allowing them to select the number of records you want to display
on the page. This way, it can be utilized by users that want speed, but
also allows the currently discussed users to see their 122 pages.

Figure out if there's a reason the need 122 pages at once. If not, add
paging.
I know sometimes users "need" that sort of thing. But sometimes it's easy
to show them a better way. Imagine if ebay showed you every auction that
matched your search on one page... :)

I need some ideas. We are currently using CGIDEV2 for building our
web applications. In this particular program, I have an SQL statement
that inserts a large amount of data into a TEMP table and it runs in
under 4 seconds. However, reading through the temp table and building
the HTML page takes over a minute. FYI, the result is a 122 printed web
page.
Typically, a user wouldn't be asking for this large amount of data,
however, the user is requesting to have this capability.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to improve the speed? Can anyone
point me in any direction?
