As the IBM Alliance Manager here at Zend I would be remiss if I didn't
chime in.
Based on your initial requirements you can use PHP in many ways: BCD's
product, open source frameworks, or use skeletons where you only need to
tweak some of the code vs. writing from scratch, etc.
I do have to inquire where can we view the research that shows PHP isn't
able to grow as well as Java and .NET. Additionally you haven't brought
up performance. Run some performance tests comparing .NET to PHP on
System i/AS400.
Are you open to combining technologies? Ie, using both PHP and Java?
Outside of the System I community there are many companies using a
blended solutions of Java and PHP. Obviously, using a blended solution
is dependent upon requirements and programming capabilities.
Regarding communicating w/ different platforms: remember, Microsoft,
Oracle, and IBM all have financial arrangements w/ Zend to create
products and support their respective channels.

Mike,
OK, to be very specific... I mean languages that will communicate
effectively and efficently with multi-platforms and RDBMs, like
mainframe, midrange, DB2, ORACLE, SQLServer, etc.
Like the idea about Java since it's very robust and extensible but
concerned about its learning curve unless there are tools to shorten the
build process yet not create non-standard Java. Would consider PHP but
research, so far, shows its not able to grow as well as Java or .NET.
Don't want to be in the MickySoft camp but have to consider them.

ASP is a multi-platform language?!? I thought it only run on Windows.
PHP and Java are true multi-platform languages.

Thanks very much for your response. Even though we have some canned
program products written in RPG, no, we don't develop nor maintain RPG.
We only develop in multi-platform IBM SAA languages, like REXX or common
marketplace, multi-platform, mature web languages like classic .ASP,
HTML, yes I like style sheets, VB, javascript and can use Java
(WebSphere environment or not) although don't have any skill in Java
yet, will consider other common marketplace, multi-platform, mature
languages.

First it's important to understand if you're building a web application,
no matter the langauge/tool/etc you use you'll be buidling dynamic HTML,
using Javascript, Stylesheets (hopefully), etc. All that is the same
no matter the tool used.
For my clients I normally ask if they are an RPG shop. If so, I suggest
CGIDEV2 or my eRPG SDK (www.erpgsdk.com).
These allow you to write web application using RPG. So, if you can
build them using RPG and green screens, then this is just changing the
delivery method to use the web.
Which requires the knowledge of HTML, JavaScript, etc.
