I did the same thing, started working on CGI and then said the heck with it, I?m fully committing to the world of Java web development. You mentioned you were starting with an applet, now you need to decide if you want to use Swing or SWT (http://www.eclipse.org/swt/) or RCP for your UI. I guess if the goal is to learn more Java and use JDBC go for it, it all helps. Otherwise, if you really don?t plan to go down the whole applet road, stick with the goal of learning JSP?s and not muddy the waters learning Swing or SWT or RCP. Where to start? Start by studying a web app that already works like the application that was published in chapter 12 of ?Java and the AS/400? (http://www.systeminetwork.com/str/books/Uniquebook2.cfm?NextBook=215) . You can download the code from the above web site. Study it, take it apart, change it, change the JDBC to use your own iSeries files. This is how you?ll learn. There was an article published recently that you should read: ?Web Development for RPG Programmers in Five Straightforward Steps?. Check it out, http://www.mc-showcase.com/mcpress/showcase.nsf/Focus/46413D0537623E6E8625724400063CFB?OpenDocument I think the author gives a fair assessment of how much time it's going to take to learn this technology. Our main problem is that we know about the tools and the technologies,
but we don't know how to really get going. >(You might compare it to building a home. There's some piece of bare ground in front of us, we have our toolbox >ready, but we do not have a detailed blueprint to actually start the construction.)
