I also use WebSmart and their portal Nexus.

You still have to have understanding of HTML, CSS concepts and of course
taken a class form the company HELPS !

Yet, you are ready to go out of the box, most of their templates are
just what you need.  Then with the foundation in place you are free to a
PML code and HTML as you need to take the up further.

I am now starting to use their Clover product which "attaches" to
Websmart and allows for great graphs and so on.........

Plus their SUPPORT and HELPS is second to NONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was facing the same situation about 2 years ago.  I found a wonderful
product called "WebSmart" from BCD software.  I encourage you to visit
http://www.bcdsoftware.com/index.htm?parm=excel to check out their
products.

In addition to WebSmart we also use Nexus, Catapult, SmartCharts and
Ez-Pickens.  All these products have solved a number of issues for us.

My background was mainly 5250 RPG applications.  I had done a few RPGILE
programs but nothing to the extent that you have.

WebSmart uses a GUI to create code called PML.  PML is a lot like RPG.
Next the PML is converted to RPGILE code that serves web pages.

My first project was to create a B2B Website.  I developed the entire
website by myself using WebSmart.  It was amazing how fast I was able to
do this.  Now our customers can inquire about order status, place
orders, check inventory and review accounting information.

The order entry process is so easy that our own order entry department
has abandoned the 5250 version for the new web interface.

I post this message because I would like to get some advice of other
people who have made the transition from a traditional
5250/RPG-environment to a Web/Java-environment.

At our shop, we are only developing 5250-applications. We use ILE RPG in
the way ILE was intended for, i.e. we have created a lot of procedures
to encapsulate business rules, we use service programs, activation
groups, etcetera. Thus, we have adopted some of the modern features of
ILE RPG, but we are still stuck with 5250-applications. We now want to
make the transition to GUI- and/or Web-applications, but we don't know
how to proceed. We have bought some books about using Java on the
iSeries, one of us is doing a course on WebSphere Application Server, we
have some thoughts about a Web-application we would like to build, but
we are not feeling confident enough to really get going. Therefore, I
would like to know how other shops have made the step to modernization.
I think that we might learn a lot from the experience of others who have
travelled along the way we have ahead of us. Any response would be
greatly appreciated.
