There is a difference in where they run. CGI apps run in Apache,
jsps/java run in an app server. Apache just passes the request on to the
app server and waits for the app server to pass HTML back to send to the
user. If the CGI APIs talk to Apache to get environment data I could
understand why the app server would not respond to those APIs

Web apps written in Java aren't typically calling using the CGI
interface.
They're called as JSP or Servlets instead. Usually by linking Apache
to a
servlet container like WAS or Tomcat.

Scott:

I'm not sure that's the case ... from what I've seen, jsp's and
servelet's are basically CGI applications ... just with a richer
feature
set. They still use the same basic functions as CGI programs.

I'm pretty sure that the standard environment variables are available
... but there are better ways to access them using the language
features.

I could be wrong though.
