Aaron,

I am excited by the prospects of PHP for the future of System i but am a
little disappointed at the initial implementation.

My understanding is that they are using the toolbox call API.

PHP runs in PASE and interfaces to the outside world via a "parallel" Apache
instance that communicates with the regular Apache server.

They do intend to tighten integration in the future but as far as I know
that's how the current setup works.

As to the "webify" bit - I think it is meant in the sense that if your
existing apps have their UI clearly separated from their business logic you
can put a PHP front end on it.

The Zend Studio IDE is free to System i users - assumedly because WDSC is
"free" to System i users while other IBM platform users have to pay for it.

It seems to me that the PHP community is remarkably similar to the System i
community. Full of enthusiastic zealots!! I'm looking forward to spending
more time with it.

For those who want to "play" before V5R4 gets to their shop, try XAMPP - it
will load and configure PHP, MySQL, Apache etc. on your PC and give you a
real easy intro to the world of PHP.
