In order to create an easy-to-use multi-tiered environment, you need to be able to TEST the tiers independently. What will make or break such an environment is the ability to create scripts of messages. They server dual purpose: sent to the UI, they test the UI processing. Matched against the server, they test the server functions. If you know that a given server matches the unit test scripts and a given UI processes the scripts properly, then you have a pretty good chance that the server and UI will work together.
