As far as I can tell, in this scenario, you should look for an MX first, if you find it it's a valid domain. If you don't find one then it's a little muddy. I can't tell if you then look for the CNAME and reprocess, or look for an 'A' record. In either case, if you find one, again you're ok. However, obviously you aren't validating the actual e-mail address. Additionally, if you find an MX record it's possible it points to a machine you cannot connect to, for whatever reason. In that case, you MUST NOT move on to the A records and attempt redelivery.
