Form handling! Your code only needs to be as big (or small) as the
given process piece...Display of db records search, user input, etc. It
isn't really meant for large implementations at the moment, or is it??
As the product matures and it gets more adoption, it will be able to do
more....i.e.:
The CGI/RPG allows for submission of jobs to the system natively through
cmdexec api, which I am not sure you can do from PHP....but here is an
opportunity to write a PHP wrapper to do such a thing and make it better
and have it do what you want it to do....then everyone can take
advantage of added functionality.

The thing that I didn't like about PHP was the lack of a solid built-in
framework (say MVC) like I have with Java coupled with Struts or JSF.
Built-in might not be the right word, but in the time I was developing
in PHP it seemed that it was just a step above raw CGI.

Note that I am aware of smarty (http://smarty.php.net/) which is very
similar to CGIDEV2, and I have been using portions of the pear
(http://pear.php.net/) package (mostly the DB portion).

I just never got the feeling that I would want to implement enterprise
level solutions in PHP, though it works great for small projects. But
then again, once you learn Java, JSF, and get a good IDE, well,
developing Java web apps becomes pretty straight forward and you have
your tiers more or less built in.

Thoughts?

I think it is an excellent move. PHP is open source which means if
there is functionality or feature that doesn't exist, wait 10 minutes.
PHP feels a lot like C and JavaScript with a few things that seem like
they came from other languages....it's the best of the best wrapped up
and it gets better as time goes by.

Excellent move!

I know we can compile and run PHP on the iSeries now, but IBM has
announced that by the end of the year all eServers will support PHP [1].
I also include some of my thoughts on the topic on my blog [2].

What do you think? Good direction for IBM? I don't want to include
NET.DATAinto this as I don't want to open that can of worms!
