Here's the recipe:
  Start with a 96 column card
  Convert to disk
  Business grows: pack the field in place
  Business grows again: Go to Binary!
  Maintain

With the advent of tools like Pathfinder, these sorts of things are unlikely
to happen nowadays, but when disk was obscenely expensive and it was a
strictly manual effort to find every affected program and OCL/CL (remember
tagalong sorts?), we actually jumped through hoops like this so we didn't
change the columnar position of anything except the affected field.
