I remember learning RPG, it was tough knowing everything to make me effective, too. Jeez, you have to learn DDS, and RPG, and OPNQRYF, and query... and then, they change stuff, so you have to learn ILE, and java, and then, darn IFS comes alog and you have to deal with that, then CL and files in CL and screens in CL. Then, you deal with permissions and subfiles and, geez, the list is endless.. This is why I'm an IT professional. No one knows everything and there's always more to learn. You have to change your definition of expert to "someone who knows a little bit more than the customer," or can learner it quicker than anyone else. dan -----Original Message----- From: Bartell, Aaron L. What I mean is do you use Struts, Ant, Tapestry, JavaServer Faces, Cocoon, Maven, the list goes on. That is the hardest part of Java - knowing there must be something out there to make something easier, but then knowing which one to use and how to use it. In comparison, I got proficient in RPG in about six months, about a year for assembly language, and a little less for Pascal/C, which I learned about the same time. COBOL took about nine months, but I don't think I ever reached the same level that I did with the other languages. I'm not sure I EVER got proficient in C++ <grin>. You can add another year or so to RPG for becoming reasonably proficient at ILE concepts and learning how to make use of the RPG IV features. Java is relatively hard work because it truly implements object orientation, and you really have to change your mindset, especially if you're a procedural programmer.
