Four or five years, Aaron. I probably got proficient in about a year
and a half. In comparison, I got proficient in RPG in about six months,
about a year for assembly language, and a little less for Pascal/C,
which I learned about the same time. COBOL took about nine months, but
I don't think I ever reached the same level that I did with the other
languages.

I'm not sure I EVER got proficient in C++ <grin>.

You can add another year or so to RPG for becoming reasonably proficient
at ILE concepts and learning how to make use of the RPG IV features.

Java is relatively hard work because it truly implements object
orientation, and you really have to change your mindset, especially if
you're a procedural programmer.

Joe
