Actually, if you just open up IE and go to the page where the favicon.ico is,
and then add the page to your favorites the favorites should now have that icon
as it's icon.

Have you tried that?

Has anyone sucessfully got the favicon to work? I'm got an favicon.ico that I
created in an icon editor, saved it at 16x16x256 yet if I point to it, my
browser wants to open or save it. If i choose open, the icon opens up in my
icon viewer. Pointing to Yahoo or MSNBC for example (www.yahoo.com/favicon.ico
or www.msnbc.com/favicon.ico) simply displays the icon right in IE. My icon is
no different than their in dimensions and color depth so I think it's the HTTP
server balling it up.
