IMHO My take on this preference would be that you will have less overhead with files being opened, programs being initialized and such - as with the web, speed is very important - some people will not come to your site if it takes longer than three seconds to get a response, let alone to wait for 5-10 seconds for a page to load - so we do all we can to squeeze every micro second out of the programs that we can.
