I thought Crystal Clear was a nice program...
http://www.inetsoftware.de/English/produkte/crystalclear/Default.htm

Its a Java based program, that can read native 'crystal reports' so by
using the Java vm, on my iseries I could take our pc based (on demand
crystal reports), and then put them on our as/400... I Optimized the
crystal-clear jar file, and then I could schedule these reports to run at
night on our iseries, and these things run fast, and then I e-mail the
reports to their intended users... (Benefit) I can create a quick reports,
point and click, and then still have my iseries run it and e-mail, so it
cuts down my development time... And I don't have to depend on an NT box or
a Workstation to produce these reports... Another Java program I use is
called POI http://jakarta.apache.org/poi/index.html this allows me to create
native excel files (xls) files on our as/400. With these classes I have
total control over the fonts, formatting, width, height, colors of each row
and column and its free... Plus it can read xls files as well... I can take
a previously created spreadsheet with graphs and then have poi read it, and
adjust the numbers for the new month, and now our accountants have a new
spreadsheets with all the new values... Sure beats a blah looking delimited
file...

Java has finally opened the door for the iseries to run 'mainstream' if you
will tools... pgp, zip, pdf, report programs, tomcat...

I know you asked for business applications, but to be fair... most of our
core RPG programs have been around for decades... So it will take time for
Java to gain ground in that area... But for tools, Java has allowed us to
pool our programmers from other systems (ie: Unix) to write a common tools
to get various jobs done...

Plus like Aaron said, its fun. And it's nice that it has so many included
standard methods.... And there are so many packages to download off the
web, that you don't waste your time re-inventing the wheel...
