Well, it's not a V5R1 thing. I don't get the JSP compile errors in my browser, either, and I'm on V4R5. Perhaps it's a WebSphere version thing? Personally, I remember seeing errors in JSPs in version 2 of WebSphere but I don't remember if I ever saw them in V3.5. On the other hand, it's not so tough to find the error in the stderr output.
