QuickPlace and Departmental Intranet Sites

I suppose this is kind of open ended but I am interested in looking at QP
as a server for departmental Intranet Sites.  I am not yet real familiar
with QP at this time so please excuse any ignorance on my part.

Largely, my thinking is that QP seems to offer:

1.)  speed to deploy
2.)  a slant towards collaborative processes
3.)  elminating traditional HTML building processes
4.)  potential as a non-technical server

I was wondering if anyone had any views on this subject.  I know my target
'application' is broad but effectively I need to create an infrastructure
for my end users to create and work with departmental Intranet sites.  The
intent of these sites can be potentially only content but our real bogie is
that of information sharing and collaboration.

Having said that, I'm not sure what I could compare and contrast QP to.
Anyone have an idea of what other products I might consider for allowing
users to maintain and create their intranet sites?
