I agree the cost of entry is too high, but I don't think competition is the answer here, there simply isn't a big enough pool of people to create a decent alternative IMO. Much as RDi irritates me compared to VS Code etc., all the other alternatives I've tried have their own problems or lack the functionality of RDi. Most feel like unfinished projects.

I would like to see an open-source collaboration between IBM and the community to develop a new generation of RDi (preferably not based on Eclipse) and some decent built tools to go with it.

Competition is also good here. The cost of entry to the IBM I workspace is
way too high for the average person to join. Other methods are needed and
the options using VS (Visual Studio) Code is great and should be supported.

ACS is a great tool now and ACS with VS Code should give you most of what
you need.
