Just a devil's advocate question. If the only features in a Pro version
were the things no one uses, who would buy it. So if IBM really want folks
to pony up for a Pro version (and it should be reasonably priced), they are
going to want to put some of the really nice things there, for example RDi
Lite would do debug, but to get SEP debug, you might have to go with Pro.
If you need source conversion, Pro. Offline access, Pro. The sweet spot
should be a Pro license while Lite is just for those who don't want to pay
for more than a Bare Bones experience. Enterprise would be for those who
have to have all the bells and whistles.

Lite could even be a single compiler or programming model version (e.g. RPG
vs. COBOL vs. C or ILE vs. OPM) though CL and DDS and SQL would have to be
available for all.

It needs the offline capability. It needs the convert-to-free.

Don't some products out there offer their early versions as a free step-in
introduction?

Following on from Michael's post, here's a hypothetical question.

If IBM Rational was to deliver a "lite" version of RDi that was
affordable, (say, <150USD - or free!), what features should it include -
and what could you do without?

Here are some thoughts:

MUST HAVES
- Remote Systems view and attendant features
- Fully-functioning LPEX Editor
- Debug (esp. SEP support0
- Compile support and Error List view
- Fully-functioning Outline View

COULD DO WITHOUT
- iProjects
- Screen and Print Designer
- Object Table Views
- Code Coverage, (probably impossible to untangle from Debug)
- Data Studio
- Program Verify
- Application Diagram
- Source member conversion
- Coding Templates
- Coding Wizards
- 5250 emulator
- Push to client/server
