I'm not a 'big' fan of them. Whenever I need to analyze a new erp
program, i invariably have to keep referring to
the msgid/msgfile to see what it is. Seems like a lot of going back and
forth.

I don't add messages because I want to see the message, inline in the
program i'm working with.

Just my preference :-)

I've never had to work with internationalization schemes type 'stuff'.

An interesting reply - especially how you emphasize not adding to
message files. So I'm curious - In saying that, do you refer to system
message files only? Do you create your own message files?

I suppose a case could be made that we don't have many compelling
reasons to create our own message files. Maybe it would be done for
service programs we write that deal with some particular functionality.
This is more like an application we purchase or like a licensed product
from IBM.

Another place is if we use the internationalization scheme where text
for display files comes from message files - something IBM itself does
all over the place.

I do suggest that a message ID is called for if we have something that
should be monitored for in a calling process - CPF9898 and CPF9897 are
often overused, even in commercial software. IMHO!
