Hi Mark,

You can sort of do it now but it is a lot of steps. You would have to
start the JVM in debuggable mode connect to it and set up whatever
breakpoints in the Java debugger. Then start debug or set the SEP on your
RPG using the IBM i debugger. Not exactly what you are hoping for but I
suspect it is unlikely that the two debuggers will merge to make the
debugging as seamless as you would like.

So, for getting the IBM to use some sort of common debuggable environment
for both Java and ILE -> IBM i DCR
and for getting RDI to create some sort of wizard or launch environment
that would allow a more seamless debugging between disparate runtimes (Java
and ILE in this case) - RDI RFE

IMHO either would be a lot of effort so a ton of push and a strong business
case would be needed to get movement on either I am sure

Mike, Edmund,

Since the RFE process replaced the DCR process, I went looking for this in
the RFE's, but it appears that DCR's were not copied over to RFE's during
the changeover. So I wanted to add an RFE, but which category should I use?
It seems to me that when RFE's are submitted to the wrong category, the
typical response is something like Decline - not my responsibility. In
addition, this issue seems to cross categories which also has caused RFE's
to be Declined - because some other group doesn't provide the necessary
support. How do we submit an RFE that may require coordinated effort
between two or more groups such as this one? My preference as a user of the
technologies would be to add the RFE to the category where I would be using
it (RDi), and that group would then submit RFE's to other groups to provide
the necessary support. That way, I don't have to know what you need from
who, and proactively submit a bunch of independent RFE's.

Mike, Edmund,
Thanks for looking into that case. I've just submitted a DCR for this
problem as Mike suggested.

Kind regards,
Radek Pilski

For the debugger on the IBM i you would actually open a Design Change
Request (DCR) rather than an RFE I believe. Here is how:

Hello Pilski

We have been looking into this issue and unfortunately this scenario is
not
currently supported.

"This scenario is not supported at the moment. In fact, this applies to
Java
calls from all compiled languages (C/C++, COBOL, RPG, etc). When you step
into Java from a compiled language program, the debugger can only see the
native JVM and not have access to the Java stack frames."
Is the feedback I got from the debugger team.

An RFE would be a better way of raising this issue with IBM.

HTH
Edmund

Out of curiosity I installed WDSC 7.0.0.4 on my workstation to try if
java
debugging works using WDSC but unfortunately I was unable to set a SEP
using that version of WDSC. I am not sure if WDSC was ever supported on
Windows 7. Since WDSC is no longer supported I gave up.
I've already contacted a local IBM representative with this issue and
following his suggestion I will submit a Service Request to IBM regarding
my
case of debugging Java using RDi.

I've only had luck debugging Java using STRSRVJOB and STRDBG, and then
I have to get timing right as the JVM has to be running before I can
let
the
debug session know which class I want to debug! I can not get RDi to
debug
any Java unless I call the Java directly from RDi. (I'm on 9.1.1.1
with
v6r1, but
I don't think there is any difference to v7r1 in this area.)

This would be a nice thing to have, especially as it is possible with
the
older
tools.
