Visual Explain is not being rushed to market. It has been IBM's plan to
replace all the functional on the Windows Access Client, with either the
web client (Navigator for i) or the Java client (Access Client Solutions).
The ability to run SQL statements was delivered in December and the ability
to do Visual Explain is coming in a few months.

Visual explain was always on the target list but If I understand it
correctly difficult to do because of the APIs used to render the display.
While I'm quite anxious to get it (have been since the new *ADMIN server
came out without it and Management Central, most of which has been
completed) I'm of the opinion I'd rather have it right and slow than broken
and fast.

Regarding the new Launch Run SQL Scripts functionality:
1. Visual explain is not available in the new version of Run SQL
and this was the only reason I would use Run SQL scripts normally (Because
visual explain is also not available in RDi which would be my preference).
The ability to run SQL over the database is already baked into RDi
(regardless of if Data Studio is installed) and RDi provides better data
export functionality than Run SQL scripts (to excel, csv etc). Therefore at
present Id much rather have the SQL inserted into a new SQL script (or SQL
scratchpad for none data studio users) than use the Run SQL scripts
functionality. Can anyone advise why Run SQL scripts has been chosen in
favour of running the SQL via RDi? i.e. what it does better than RDi (and
should I start using it more!?)

Also some usability questions:
2. Our source control system uses the comment characters in
positions 1-5 of source lines to store version numbers, and these get
inserted into the RunSQL script unless doing a rectangular select. This
would also affect anyone using the Add signature to changes lines option in
RDi. I realise that IBM are moving toward fully free which removes these
comment characters but at the moment having to change to rectangular select
to use this is a minor annoyance. Could the option to ignore the first 5
characters of a source line (and possibly the comments at the end of the
lines) be offered when using this?
3. Run SQL Scripts doesnt ignore the EXEC SQL statement, so the
fact that that is copied and requires removal is another minor annoyance.
Since this statement is not valid SQL, can it be removed when copying to
Run
SQL scripts?
ER> This would be a future enhancement, i.e. stripping out the non-SQL
portions of the selection. I would encourage you to open an RFE for this.
As I have given it some thought and would love to have some demonstratable
customer demand to justify the investment.

Jon,
RUN SQL is completely independent of Data Studio. You don't even have to
have Data Studio installed. Instead it is using the Access Client Solutions
support which has recently been added and is IBM i specific.
If
you already have ACS installed we will use the existing install, otherwise
we will launch from the copy shipped with RDi. But you can always start ACS
yourself and run the function from there.
The savings with ILE RPG is that we will take your selection in the editor
and prepopulate the Run SQL Statement page in ACS with that. So if you
select you SELECT statement in RDi, and select "Launch Run SQL Scripts"
from the Source menu, we will bring up ACS, connect to the same IBM i your
source if from, and populate the page in ACS. All you have to do is hit the
Run button.
So this is a much tighter integration story then we have ever had before.
We also integrated with ACS for spooled file support. If you right click on
the 'Spooled Files' subsystem and select 'Launch Printer Output', we again
bring up ACS showing the output queue on the current system. You can filter
which queues and users you want to show on the Edit->Filter dialog, you can
click on any column to sort, you have lots of download options.
Go ahead and play.

Im glad that Kurt is excited but I have two problems with this.
1) The option only appears for RPG SQL sources - not COBOL. Havent checked
for C or CL but Im guessing it will also be missing there. Wouldnt have
noticed this but Im teaching an Intro to IBM i for mainframe COBOL folks
this week.
2) The option appears but nothing happens. Im guessing that is because I
have not plugged Studio into RDi - I run it free-standing. Can the IBMers
here please confirm this? I would have expected the option to only appear
if
the feature was enabled in the product but ...
