This sounds familiar and I think it has to do with numeric shift. The shift
does not allow edit code.

another line, and the edit keyword disappears. Try copying one from another
field using line editing commands, new keyword appears for a few seconds, then

field reference file. The only way to avoid the craziness is to avoid the
