Thanks Edmund,

I will give this a try when I get home this evening.

Problem (Abstract)
The help content for IBM Rational Eclipse-based products may be missing,
either topics in the Table of Contents, or some contextual help.
Symptom
The Preferences > Help > Content page appears twice in the preferences
dialog, and neither of them can be edited.
The workspace/.metadata/.log file contains an error similar to the
following:

java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: Array index out of range: 2
at org.eclipse.help.ui.internal.preferences.ICPreferences.prefsToICs
(ICPreferences.java:89)
at org.eclipse.help.ui.internal.preferences.ICPreferences.getICs

at org.eclipse.help.ui.internal.preferences.ICTable.loadPreferences
(ICTable.java:279)
at org.eclipse.help.ui.internal.preferences.ICTable.<init>(ICTable.java:58)

Cause
This is caused by a corruption of a configuration file due to a formatting
change.

This issue is generally found in shell-sharing scenarios where multiple
Rational products are installed into the same Eclipse shell, or an upgrade
of an existing product

Resolving the problem
This issue has been resolved and the fix will be delivered in all future
versions.
WORKAROUND:
1. Backup and delete the following directory and file:
<product install folder>\configuration\com.ibm.ut.help.common
<workspace>\.metadata\.plugins\org.eclipse.core.runtime\.settings
\org.eclipse.help.base.prefs

2. Restart the product.

Help will be now be accessible.

Mike,

I updated and still show the same path name of
C:\Users\<username>\.eclipse\org.eclipse.platform_4.2.0_2106402103\

When I go to the Preferences > Help I see 2 Content listings. When I
click on one I get a message window with the text "The currently displayed
page contains invalid values" - When I click on the 2nd "CONTENT" in the
list I get the same message. If I click on the "Local Help Updater" in the
list I get a set of prompts that look normal. When I click back on
"CONTENT" heading I get a display but I can't do anything with it.

This happens with both the current workspace and a new one I created.

I end and restart with the -clean option and I get the exact same results.

I downloaded the trial from the developers page and used the Installation
manager to update from 9.0 to 9.0.1

Any thoughts on what I might do next? I can uninstall and re-install if
you believe that might help.

Thanks!

Hi Jim,

That is odd. I have RDI 9.0 installed from the DeveloperWorks trial site
then updated with 9.0.1 downloaded from Fix Central so it should be the
same as what you have. However I do also have RDz and RBD 9.0.1 but I
would expect them to use the same level of the help system as RDI.

The local help would not connect probably because it is not configured to
run by default so that part of the result is not unexpected. You may
wish
to go into the help preferences at Help > Content and make sure that RDI
remote help is enabled and pointing to "
http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/iadthelp/v9"; and that local help is
disabled. This may require restarting RDI.

If you try a new workspace what is the outcome in that case? If it still
fails then you may wish to restore the plugin settings in your user
directory

Mike,

I tried this and when restarting RDi was prompted that "Help was not
installed" and presented two options, work without help and use the local
help updater. I tried the local help updater, and received a message
that
it could not connect.

The only difference is one in the path name of the first path. You have
a
number 2139427097 there and my install shows 2106402103.

Does that make a difference?

For anyone still concerned ...

I have a work-around for this issue.

Warning: If you have added infocenters to your help preferences other
than the ones that are automatically added then you will have to add
them
again after following this work-around for this issue in RDI 9.0.1.

Prep: close any running instances of RDI 9

First Step: Rename the directory
C:\Users\<your-userid>\.eclipse\org.eclipse.platform_4.2.0_2139427097
\configuration\com.ibm.ut.help.common\
to

C:\Users\<your-userid>\.eclipse\org.eclipse.platform_4.2.0_2139427097
\configuration\com.ibm.ut.help.common-original

Second Step: Rename the directory

<workspace>\.metadata\.plugins\org.eclipse.core.runtime\.settings
\org.eclipse.help.base.prefs
to

<workspace>\.metadata\.plugins\org.eclipse.core.runtime\.settings
\org.eclipse.help.base.prefs-original
(or just create a new workspace)

Complete: restart RDI 9.0.1 and again enjoy your F1 help goodness!

If any of the above is unclear or if it does not resolve the RDI 9.0.1
F1
help issue for you please let us know.

All the best, Mike

We are trying to fix this problem that was recently reported by 2
people
so
far on this list.
We are wondering if anyone else is experiencing this? Has anyone
experienced this on previous releases?

BTW, a cool thing in 9.0.1 is that F1 on opcodes in free form, now
gives
you specific help for that op code.
Yes Jon, I was thinking of you when we fixed that. :-) Merry Christmas
to
you.
More goodness to come in that area.
