I believe this is a documented issue. Here's an email from Mike not too long ago.
"1) Yup, there is an APAR open for that. A work-around is to click on the button then back on the source and I think the icons should light up again

2) and there is an APAR open for that too, the work-around for it is to use the button rather than pushing Enter but you have figured that out already ;)

This looks like something I encounter at times.
Sometimes in an RPGLE source, the verify and compile buttons will be grayed out. Switching to the outline and back, will enable them again.
I've not yet been able to figure out when and why this happens, though.

Has anyone else had the problem of the Source tab on the menu bar disappearing? I use it to resequence all lines as I develop but from time to time the tab disappears. It happened again today but when I tried to document the steps I had taken I couldn't reproduce it. When it happens I usually have more than one source open so I just click into a different source and then come back and the tab reappears.
