They need access to the installation repository to get certain files that they need to install the update properly. Someone smarter than me will probably tell us why that's the best way to do it.
If your original install repository isn't readily available, there is an IBM repository that you can use at https://www.ibm.com/software/repositorymanager/com.ibm.rational.developer.ibmi.v90. Just go into Installation Manager, File => Preferences, and add it as your active Repository location. If your internet connection is a decent speed - 3 Mbps is adequate - then it isn't bad.

Subject: [WDSCI-L] Updating RDI
I went thru the IBM Installation manager, to see if there were recent updates to my 9.0 version. I got so far, and then reached an impasse, as it asked for the 9.0 installation disk (or repository). This is hard to locate. Doesn't the IBM install manager know what is on my laptop already, and also know I have a valid license? It seems like they could make this process a little simpler. Any improvements on the horizon?
