The system administrator change the keep alive time to 5 (minutes) as suggested and this does seem to be an improvement. I still have timeouts after a short idle time but not near as many. And I have still been able to work (no time out) after leaving RDi up over lunch.

Strangely enough, I didn't have this problem when I used WDSCi 7.0 up until one month ago...

Well it's been a week and I have not had any issues with RDi dropping while over VPN. Looks like this Keep Alive setting might be the answer.
